Don’t get me wrong, I love my Mazda Rx-7, well- all three actually, but none of them make a “good” daily driver. My current job has me commuting 40 miles each day, totaling around 10,000 miles a year. At a very uncommonly high 18MPG average in my current 1994 Touring 5 spd model, it’s costing me $2k in fuel just to get to work and back. There’s a whole plethora of other issues: the suspensions too firm, the limited number of seats (2), and ACT racing clutch sure does not help in Portland traffic. But realistically the real reason I want to stop is I hate putting on so many miles on such a rare car. Knock on wood, the last ~6,000 miles it’s been the most reliable car we own. Since it looks like I’m going to be working downtown for the foreseeable future- it’s time to get a new daily driver.
I will just have to save this for nice weather.
As of writing this, I’m torn between half a dozen cars. Do I buy used? CPO? Bite the depreciation bullet and buy new? Do I want a manual or a auto? Petrol or Diesel? AWD? 2WD? Ford, Mazda, Subaru, VW, Toyota/Lexus, BMW? It’s funny, I get asked constantly by friends/family who want car advise and yet I can’t choose one for myself! I’m test driving cars this week. You will have to wait and see what I end up with, because at this point it’s a toss of the dice.
